25 years without a salary
I have run my own businesses for more than 25 years, mostly in construction and real estate. In all that time I never had a paycheck. Money came in as project payments, deposits and closings: a lot in one month, almost nothing in the next, and never on a schedule.
I learned the hard way that a good month can make you careless and a slow one can make you panic, even when the business underneath is doing fine. The problem was rarely how much I earned. It was that I could not see, at any given moment, how much was really coming in and where it was heading.

Why the app puts income first
Every budgeting app I tried asked me to plan around a monthly income I did not have, and then to feel guilty about every coffee. For someone who earns on their own, that is the wrong question. The useful questions are: how much am I earning right now, who is paying me, is it rising or falling, and what can I safely pay myself?
MoneyWorks Lite is built around those questions. It tracks the latest 30 days instead of a calendar month, shows income by client, keeps business and personal money apart and lets you pay yourself on purpose. It is the tool I wanted for my own money, made for anyone in the same position.

Who writes the guides
I write the guides on this site from my own experience with irregular income, paying myself and running money like a small business. My wife, Victory Naydenova, is an author too: her workbook The Money Formula is published free on this site, and many of our ideas about the psychology of money come from working on them together.
Every guide shows the date it was last updated. They explain how money works for people who earn on their own; they are not personal financial, legal or tax advice. For taxes and legal questions, check with a qualified professional where you live.
